The smell of a healthy vagina is mild, slightly pungent with a pleasant and musky aroma. It definitely does not smell like a dead fish rotting or have a strong foul odor.
Poor hygiene can also be a cause of bad vaginal odor in certain women.
Bacterial vaginosis, or BV, is typically the cause of vaginal odour. Bacterial Vaginosis is a very common vaginal infection. It occurs when bacteria that normally exist in small numbers in the vagina multiply rapidly. Even though antibiotic medication is effective in up to 90% of cases, 25% of women will develop BV again within four weeks.
Listed below are some effective home remedies for feminine vaginal odour:
Remove sugar from your diet! Avoid all sugar until the active infection passes plus two weeks longer. After this, reduce your overall sugar intake by less than one-third what you are currently eating. This includes the sugar that is found in processed foods.
Clove Oil / Clove Tea
In a clinical trial, eugenol (present in clove tree oil) was as effective as prescription medicines used in the treatment of bacterial vaginosis and vaginal candidiasis.
Diluted Clove Oil with water or Clove Tea can be used as a vaginal rinse or add five drops of Clove Oil to your bath.
Please DO NOT use concentrated essential Clove oil directly on the vaginal area as it may burn!!!
Garlic
Garlic as a Natural Treatment for Vaginal Odour: It is suggested that the anti-fungal property of garlic can check yeast infection, thereby treating vaginal odour. One might make a paste of fresh garlic and apply it to the vaginal area. Alternately, one may wrap some fresh garlic in cheesecloth, tie it and insert it into the vagina for some time. It is truly effective or you can say magical remedy for your vaginal infection.
Tea Tree Oil
In my opinion this is one of the strongest natural cures for BV.
Tea Tree Oil as a Natural Cure for Vaginal Odour: Experts believe that the antifungal property of tea tree oil can help in treating vaginal odour. Mix 2-3 tbsp tree tea oil in a small bowl of water. Rinse your vagina with the solution. You can also try this remedy on a tampon.
Vinegar
Vinegar has many valuable purposes and one being the vinegar rinse. Apple cider vinegar has been used for centuries to fight off toxins. Its natural antibacterial tendencies fight off the bad bacteria that can cause a woman to suffer from bacterial vaginosis. Mix one tablespoon of vinegar per quart of warm water – this work wonders. You can also do this to your bath.
Goldenseal
Goldenseal is another herb that helps the immune system fight against the Bacterial Vaginosis. To treat vaginal odour take Goldenseal orally, use it as a tea and drink three times a day. Alternatively, you can buy capsules Goldenseal, and take as directed, two Goldenseal capsules every day till your smell clears off completely. Goldenseal is also available in a tincture or powder form.
Yoghurt
Eat yogurt regularly. It acts as a Probiotic. It is a safe home remedy to treat vaginal fish odour.
You can also insert some yogurt with the help of a tampon inside your vagina to expel the fishy odour caused due to Bacterial Vaginosis. Yogurt helps balance the bacterial flora.
Tracheal
A traditional herb known as Tracheal has the property to eliminate toxins like bacteria or parasites from our body. To cure bacterial vaginosis take 1 teaspoon of dried tracheal and soak it into 1 cup of hot water. Drink this solution like tea before bedtime. If you don’t like its taste than try to consume 500 mg capsules daily as a natural remedy.
Sage
One of my favourites. Sage has antimicrobial and antibacterial properties and help to fight infections. Recent laboratory studies support the use of Sage to guard against infections it has demonstrated an ability to fight against several infection causing bacteria. Drinking Sage tea three times a day or rinsing the vagina with Sage tea could help against Bacterial Vaginosis and vaginal odour. To add to your bath sprinkle half a cup of Sage into a warm bath and have a long soak.
For a homebrewed Sage tea, Add two teaspoons of dried leaves to a mug of boiling water. Steep for 10 minutes, strain then drink.
Thyme
Another one of my favourites. Thyme (Thymus vulgaris) is a strong killer of fungus, bacteria, mould, yeast, viruses and has potent antimicrobial properties it also relieves discharge, itching and thrush. A vaginal rinse can be made with two tablespoons of Thyme and three cups of boiling water.
Use as a vaginal rinse several times a day. You can also do this to your bath.
Besides relieving the itching and burning, Wormwood vaginal washes help restore the flora and reduce abnormal secretions.
Boil 4 tablespoons of wormwood in 1 l / 34 oz water for 5 minutes. Strain, then let it cool at body temperature. Drink this tea several times a day between meals and apply a compress moistened with tea in the vagina letting it act for 20 minutes. Repeat 2-3 times a day.
The foods that are believed to be good for certain types of bacterial infections include :
Yogurt (The plain and unflavored kind)
Garlic
Onions
Vinegar
Oatmeal
Applesauce
Mashed beans
In order to flush out the germs from the body, you need to increase your consumption of water too.
