Herbal Therapy : Saint. John’s Wort

St. John’s Wort has proven to be effective in the treatment of depression and helpful for generalized anxiety disorder and somatoform disorders in research studies.
For sleep problems St John’s Wort can help to increase the production of the hormone melatonin (the brain’s natural sedative) to help improve the quality of sleep.
St John’s wort has been used for so-called ‘nervous disorders’ for a couple of thousand years and is a Natural treatment for OCD.
St. John’s Wort is a perennial herb that can be easily recognized by its bright yellow-colored flowers. It received its name by the day that it is commonly harvested, June 24th, which is often known as “St. John’s Day’
Evidence suggests that if St John’s Wort is taken at a sufficiently high dose, it is as effective as pharmaceutical antidepressants for mild, and possibly moderate, depression. However, it is unlikely to benefit people with more severe depression.

Research in Germany found 82% of people taking St Johns Wort suffered less irritability, anxiety, low mood, sweating and disturbed sleep. 60% reported increased self-esteem, self-confidence and self-respect.

It is now being used to treat some behavioural problems in pets. St. John’s Wort has been used to treat dogs for obsessive-compulsive disorders, dermatitis, separation anxiety and aggression

There are some mild side effects associated with the use of this herb. These include: upset stomach, skin rash, fatigue, restlessness, headache, dry mouth, dizziness, and occasionally a sensitivity to sunlight.
Do not take during pregnancy or breast-feeding.
Saint. John’s Wort should be taken under the supervision of an pharmacist or physician.
